KTA, Raising Market Competition for Electronic Hogu
Jun Chul Shin; Translation: Richard Lee (2009/01/09) ¤Ó reco:0

Standards for Electronic Hogu will be Announced This Week

Korea Taekwondo Association (President Jun Pyo Hong, KTA) completed its official discussions about electronic hogu and decided to announce their standards.

KTA held a meeting on January 5th and decided on the basic expectations from an electronic hogu system. Specialist Jin Bang Yang stated, "Most importantly we need to specifically determine the amount of impact necessary for scoring, so that it can be consistent. Other minor details and programming problems can follow after". KTA had been experimenting with electronic hogu at their matches, and collected vast quantity of information from referees, coaches, and competitors.

Once KTA finalizes their standards for electronic hogu system, KTA plans to send it to Korea Institute of Sports Science (KISS). Electronic hogu will be thoroughly tested there. They plan to fine tune the range of acceptable error; for example, a kick with enough impact to meet KTA's standard versus a kick that is almost identical, but slightly weaker. KTA will only use an electronic hogu system that can specifically meet all their standards.

KTA is keeping electronic hogu manufacturers on their toes. World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) already approved La JUST, but this opens the door for companies like Adidas, Daedo, and other manufacturers. The revival of market competition should drive these manufacturers to further develop and provide a better system.

A prominent TKD figure stated, "KTA did what WTF was supposed to do. Korea is a leader in IT and it doesn't make any sense that this is the best electronic hogu system we can produce". He also added, "if companies like Samsung or LG, or even top universities like KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) and POSTECH decide to get into development, we will have a system approved by all TKD people".

WTF decided to wait until KTA officially releases their standards before taking any actions. KTA plans to go into advanced testing as soon as they release their standards for electronic hogu.
