World Taekwondo Culture Festival, the festival for all world Taekwondo family, had the opening ceremony on July 1, entering into 7 days' programs. This is the 4th festival, where 1500 from about 60 countries participated to compete.
World TKD Culture Festival this time, which Chung Cheong College and KBS Chung Ju Broadcasting Station co-hosted, actually started with the celebration concert going on in Seoul National Theatre Big Hall back on June 28 and with 'Marial Artist's Dance' as another celebration event at Chung Cheong College Convention Center on June 30. All these pre-events helped to attract a lot of attention.
During the Opening Ceremony at Chung Ju Gymnasium on July 1, 300 people of USA troops and Chung Cheong College TKD Demo Team performed Taekwondo demonstrations in succession. These were followed by some mask dancing called 'Kosung Okwangdae Nori' and drum dancing called 'Jindo Bukchum.'
President Kim Dae Jung's congratulatory address was read by Lee Won Jong, Governor of Chung Buk Province, which said, "Taekwondo is a nation-protecting martial art and it has worked out to make up a desirable role model." And then he added, "Korean Taekwondo practitioners should keep training and studying to keep the current Korean status as Taekwondo motherland."
At 10 in the morning before the opening ceremony was held Sacred Fire Making Ceremony on the mountain Taeryong San in Jin Chon County, which is the birthplace of General Kim Yoo Shin. Chae Kwan Moo, chairman of Jin Chon County Taekwondo Association, made a fire and the torch was delivered through 140 people's chain from the mountain top down to the square. And then Shim Kyu Chang (Poongkwang Elementary School 4 grader) and Maco from Australia finally lighted the torch stand in the Chung Ju Gymnasium around 4 in the afternoon.
Near the Taeryong Mountrain in Jin Chon County, various events such as a sky-worshiping ceremony, visit to Hwanrang Taekwondo sites, Samulnori to welcome Taekwondo competitors, and horse-riding martial arts were going on, too.
By the way, on June 2, the first day, world Taekwondo martial art games including designated poomsae, Kyukpa, and creative poomsae were going on in Chung Cheong College Convention Center.
